A Free Home Comfort System for a Family in Need - OPERATION WARM WISHES

Customer Story: He Was Quoted a Full Furnace Replacement. Our Second Opinion Found a 20-Minute Fix.

Two days of heavy rain flooded Susan’s basement, and her gas furnace stopped working with the outdoor temperature at 40 degrees. The company she had used for 16 years gave her an answer. But a second opinion from Lakeside Heating & Air Conditioning gave her a better one.

The Problem

The flood reached Susan’s furnace, and her usual HVAC company said the control panel and flame sensor were ruined. Because the furnace was older, they said replacement parts were no longer available, and they recommended replacing the whole system.

A close friend suggested that Susan get a second opinion from Lakeside. She called before agreeing to the replacement.

What the Technician Found

A Lakeside technician arrived quickly and had the furnace running in about 20 minutes. The problem was rust on the flame sensor and a blown fuse in the control panel, not the major failure Susan had been told to expect. The repair cost a small fraction of the replacement quote.

“We were absolutely stunned,” Susan said.

What a Flame Sensor and a Fuse Do

A gas furnace’s flame sensor is a small metal rod that sits in the burner flame. It confirms to the control board that the burners lit. If the rod is coated with rust or residue, it cannot send that signal, and the control board shuts the gas off as a safety measure. The furnace then tries to start, fails to confirm a flame, and shuts down again. Cleaning or replacing the sensor is a short job.

The control board also carries a fuse that protects it from electrical faults. Moisture from a flood can blow that fuse, and a blown fuse makes the board look dead when it is not. Replacing the fuse restores it.

Neither repair requires parts specific to an older furnace model. After a basement flood, the technician also confirms that the blower motor and the gas valve stayed dry, because water in either one is a different repair.

Why Getting a Second Opinion Paid Off

Susan’s experience shows how two companies can see the same problem differently. A technician who tests the parts before condemning them can save a homeowner the cost of a full system and keep the house from going days without heat during a cold snap.

“We are so incredibly thankful for their honesty, professionalism, and ingenuity,” Susan said.
